Project Information
This project is a result of the public’s request for a pedestrian path made at a Public Information Meeting for the SC 61 Rural Road Safety Project, held on July 14, 2022. The design of the proposed mixed use path is still in the early stages of development. Please provide feedback and help us make decisions that are the best for your community!
Project Description:
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) proposes to construct a 10' shared use path along a 3.3 mile section of SC 61 (Beech Hill Rd) from S-163 (Summers Drive) to SC 165 (Bacons Bridge Road) in Dorchester County. The purpose of the project is to provide pedestrian connectivity and increased safety for non-motorized users within the surrounding community.
Project Alternatives:
Shared use paths such as the one proposed for Beech Hill Road provide a safe location for residents to walk, run, and bicycle, and provide a way for residents to travel to school or work without having to navigate our increasingly crowded roads. SCDOT supports the construction of shared use paths wherever they are feasible, but recognizes that like any construction project they come with costs and impacts. We are currently studying two possible locations for the shared use path, on the north side of the road and the south side of the road.
