Project Information
Project Description:
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) proposes to improve the intersection of S-33 (Trenholm Rd) & S-1677(O'Neil Ct) in Richland County, SC.
Proposed Improvements:
The improvements consist of updated pavement markings and signage, signal upgrades, reduced lane widths, offset left-turn lanes, and raised concrete median on all approaches.
This intersection was selected for improvement through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). This program uses a data- driven strategic approach to identify locations throughout the state with high crash rates or patterns and implements safety enhancements through infrastructure-related improvements. The HSIP project selection requires an engineering study that includes an analysis of the crash data, an assessment of the field conditions, and an evaluation of the effectiveness of all potential countermeasure to ensure maximum safety benefits are obtained for the amount of funds invested.
In a recent 5 year period, there were 53 crashes, 40 of which were right-angle crashes which have the potential to be severe.
Purpose and Need:
The purpose and need of the project is to mitigate the existing safety issues at the intersection.
