Project Information

Project Description:

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), in partnership with the Appalachian Council of Governments, proposes to reconfigure the existing intersection of US 29 (Granard Street) and Floyd Baker Boulevard (S-354) in the City of Gaffney.

Proposed Improvements:

Proposed intersection improvements include:

  • Updating traffic signal timing
  • Installing backplates on all traffic signal heads
  • Resurfacing and restriping the roadway
  • Increasing the turning radius to better accommodate large freight trucks
  • Constructing two high-visibility crosswalks
  • Removing three driveways near the intersection to improve access management
  • Installing a raised median
  • Improving drainage to better manage stormwater runoff

The intersection will be kept open during construction with reduced lanes and widths. Pedestrian access will be maintained via phased detours of approximately 0.25 miles throughout construction. A signed detour route will be provided for truck traffic utilizing W. Frederick Street.

Purpose and Need:

The purpose of the project is to improve traffic flow, enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians, and address drainage concerns at the intersection of US 29 and Floyd Baker Boulevard.
