Project Information
Project Description:
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) proposes to modify lane configurations with a "road diet" along a section of East Main Street between Converse Street and East St. John Street in the City of Spartanburg, SC.
Project Update (May 15, 2026) - SCDOT and the City of Spartanburg held a public information meeting on April 16, 2026, at Mary Black Foundation from 4 to 6 p.m. SCDOT representatives provided a presentation and shared project plans with attendees. Based feedback from the public, SCDOT has made two updates to project plans. The updated plans are shown below. SCDOT anticipates construction will begin this month.
- Bicycle lanes will be located between the sidewalk and parallel parking spaces
- The lane configuration will include two left turn lanes for vehicles turning from E. Main Street (westbound) onto S. Pine Street.
Proposed Improvements:
The proposed improvements include a Lane Diet along this section of E. Main Street. Currently East Main Street has two vehicle lanes in each direction, with a total of four lanes. When the road is modified, it will have one vehicle lane in each direction, a two-way left turn lane, and bike lanes along both sides.
Work will take place within the existing pavement footprint. Lanes will be modified in coordination with scheduled resurfacing work.
Purpose and Need:
The purpose of the project is to improve safety, mobility, and multimodal transportation.
