The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is proposing improvements to I-26 beginning just south of the Caw Caw Road interchange at Exit 136 and ending south of the US 601 (St. Matthews Road) interchange at Exit 145 within both Calhoun and Orangeburg Counties.

The proposed improvements include adding a third travel lane in each direction, modify existing interchanges that allow access to/from the interstate, and replace overpass bridges to accommodate the additional travel lane..

The purpose of this project is to increase capacity within the project study limits to alleviate existing and future congestion, address geometric deficiencies at the interchanges by bringing them up to current interstate design standards, and the improve corridor safety by addressing geometric deficiencies that contribute to the corridor's crash rate.

Interchange bridges are to remain open during construction

• The signed detour route is about 7.9 miles for S-16 (Murph Mill Road) bridge.
• The signed detour route is about 4.6 miles for S-1304 (New Hope Road) bridge.
• The signed detour route is about 7.0 miles for S-166 (Water Spring Road) bridge.

Local citizens may take their preferred route.
