Project Information

Project Description:

The South Carolina Department ofTransportation (SCDOT) will make improvements to the S-48 (Columbia Avenue) corridor in the Town of Chapin in Lexington County. The project corridor begins at the interchange of I-26 and S-48 (Columbia Avenue) and continues to the intersection of S-48 (Columbia Avenue), S-51 (Amicks Ferry Road), and US 76 (Chapin Road) in downtown Chapin.

Proposed Improvements:

SCDOT will widen S-48 (Columbia Avenue), adding raised grassy medians, starting near I-26 and continuing to a new road that will be built near Chapin High School and continuing to a new roundabout. At the second exit from the new roundabout, another new road will continue past US 76 (Chapin Road) and Lexington Avenue, ending at Amicks Ferry Road.

Purpose and Need:

The purpose of the project is to help relieve traffic congestion and improve traffic operations in the Town of Chapin. The project will help provide several viable routes between the I-26 side of Chapin and Lake Murray and will help prevent congestion at Columbia and Lexington Avenue.

Construction Activity:

Clearing around Columbia Avenue will allow for utility relocation. Work to widen Columbia Avenue will take place in stages to keep at least one lane of traffic open in each direction during construction. Throughout the project, SCDOT will work to minimize disruptions and traffic impacts.
