Bridge Description

The 14 span, 262'-long bridge has a 90'-long pin-connected thru truss over the stream's main channel flanked by timber stringer approach spans. The lightly built truss is traditionally composed of eye bar tension members and built-up compression members. The timber stringer approach spans appear new (ca. 1990) and a modern sign on the truss portal reads, "Reconstructed by SC Army National Guard 122nd Engineer Bn," but the truss does not appear to have been altered as part of the recent reconstruction. Curiously, there is no information about the reconstruction in the state bridge inspection file.

Significance

According to the 1981 truss survey, the bridge was relocated here after 1928 when a previous bridge at the crossing was washed out. State bridge records list a date of 1932, but the light thru truss is several decades older in style and appears to date ca. 1910. It appears to be one of the oldest pin-connected truss bridge remaining on-system in the state. The bridge has integrity and is historically and technologically significant as an uncommon example of an important resource type that was instrumental in the initial improvement of a statewide network of improved roads. Pin connected truss bridges are rare in South Carolina. The bridge meets criterion A and C.
