US 1 (GERVAIS STREET) Bridge

Bridge Description

The 11 span, 1,415'-long bridge has nine 140'-long open spandrel arch spans flanked by two shorter closed spandrel arch spans at each end. It is finished with concrete balustrades (replaced in-kind ca. 2004) with urn-shaped balusters and replica light standards (ca. 2005) set atop the paneled end posts. The 2-rib arches support spandrel columns with capitals, arched spandrel caps, and brackets for the cantilevered deck sections.

Signifcance

The Gervais Street Bridge is NR-listed (1980). Built in 1927, the open spandrel arch bridge is one of the state's signature historic bridges.
