Bridge Description

The 3 span, 93'-long, reinforced concrete deck arch bridge built in 1920 has incised panel concrete parapets, cantilevered deck section with brackets, and concrete abutments. It is unclear from the available inspection data whether the cantilevered deck section and parapets are original or a later alteration to widen the bridge. The 26'-wide deck width would have been uncommonly wide for a rural bridge in 1920.The parapets, however, are the same paneled design usually associated with Luten arches, and the 1920 builder's plaque is set into the roadway face of at least one of the parapets.

Significance

The 1920 reinforced concrete arch bridge built by the Luten Bridge Company was determined eligible in the 1991 SCDOT Bridge Survey. The setting has changed, but the bridge retains the other aspects of integrity.
