Setting: The bridge carries a striped, 4 lane highway with center turning lane and sidewalks over a stream on the east side of Converse.The Clifton Mill (now closed) and dam are located upstream and northwest quadrant of the bridge. The Southern Railway main line bridge over the river is to the south of the highway bridge.
Bridge Description
The 6 span, 467'-long bridge was built in 1925 with a 184'-long open spandrel arch main span flanked by 3 closed spandrel arch approach spans on the west end and 2 closed spandrel arches and 1 T beam span on the east end.The original bridge had a 20'-wide roadway.In 1972 the bridge was widened to the upstream (north) side with steel stringer extensions supported on hammerhead piers.The original downstream elevation is complete, including the original concrete balustrade.The upstream widened side has a 1 rail high concrete railing dating from 1972.
Significance
The handsome 1925 open spandrel arch bridge was widened to one side in 1972. It has been determined eligible in the 1991 SCDOT Bridge Survey.
