  • Description

    The Department proposes to replace the S-91 (River Road) bridge over Burden Creek in Charleston County. The existing S-91 facility is comprised of two, 10-foot travel lanes with approximately one-foot paved shoulders.

  • Proposed Improvements

    The project includes replacing the existing bridge structure and constructing the roadway to meet current design and safety standards. The proposed roadway section will now provide two, 12-foot travel lanes with two-foot paved and eight-foot grassed shoulders.

  • Purpose and Need

    The purpose of the project is to correct structural deficiencies of the existing S-91 bridge over Burden Creek.

  • Project Constraints

    • Approximately 10 mile detour if bridge is replaced on existing alignment (see route in Project Maps tab)
    • Potential impacts to a Civil War battlefield (Battle of Burden’s Causeway) if the bridge is replaced in a new location
    • Potential impacts to protected wetlands that surround the bridge
    • Potential impacts to canopy trees that line River Road
