S-277 Bridge Replacement Over Twelve Mile Creek
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) proposes to replace the S-277 (Lay Bridge Road) Bridge over Twelve Mile Creek in Pickens County. The existing bridge is functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. Lay Bridge Road is currently closed at the bridge and traffic is detoured.
The project will relocate the current alignment slightly to the west to accommodate a 25-mph design speed and has a profile slightly above existing. The project utilizes traditional bridge elements and minimizes impacts while replacing the bridge and upgrading the roadway to current standards.
The purpose of the proposed project is to eliminate structural deficiencies and to provide a bridge and roadway approaches that meet current SCDOT standards.
The area around the bridge is pristine, forested, and utilized as a recreational area for kayaking, hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities as part of the 3o mile Twelve Mile Blueway Trail.
Minimizing construction impacts is crucial for a context sensitive design and protecting the waterway during demolition and construction is paramount.
